The Essentials

Our award-winning half day workshop
The Essentials workshop is the foundation for workplace wellbeing, and it’s at the core of everything we do at The Mental Health Toolkit.
This half-day session takes you through the Mental Health Continuum – the spectrum of mental health that we are all on – and introduces you to the Emotional Needs & Resources approach.
Unmet emotional needs trigger symptoms of mental ill health. Understanding how to meet them helps you understand what you need to be well, and enables you to take care of yourself and those around you.
The Essentials workshop will help you:
- Undo misconceptions about mental health
- Raise awareness of your emotional needs
- Support yourself and those around you
- Better understand sleep and mental health
- Reduce the cost of sickness absence
- Create a healthier place to work

The Essentials manual, and our Emotional Needs & Resources cards
The Essentials course covers:
- The Mental Health Continuum
- Emotional Needs
- Sleep & Depression
- Security & Trauma
- Innate Resources
Go beyond the signs and symptoms to learn about the most exciting and cutting-edge approach to workplace wellbeing in the UK.

Thank you so much for this – a really insightful and practical take on modern mental health and wellbeing.
This was one of the best training courses I’ve ever done. Very informative, the trainer was amazing. I’ve recommended it to several people!
Some excellent training from The Mental Health Toolkit by Suffolk Mind that provided some valuable insights and practical tools for personal/professional development, and working with young people (highly recommend!).
There was some really useful information on the Mental Health Continuum (the spectrum of mental health that we are all on) and how to take care of yourself and those around you.
We also discussed the Emotional Needs & Resources approach, and I particularly enjoyed the information delivered around sleep and its relationship to mental health.
I’d recommend this session for any managers or teams as a whole looking to develop their understanding around mental health.
The Essentials course was great. It felt well-balanced between a large amount of information, but with enough time for it to not feel overwhelming. Penny was a great trainer and was very approachable, knowledgeable and very happy to answer any questions we had. The group size and content felt appropriate also.
I felt the topics covered were important and interesting. Timing (topics, breaks, discussions) was fab and slick use of tech with the breakout rooms. Penny is a great teacher, engaging, articulate and thorough.
Really good session, friendly and approachable. Relevant to professional and personal life.
Karys was a fantastic trainer – she was patient, inclusive and approachable. The content was really interesting, easy to understand, and would be relevant to anyone. I got so much more out of the training than I expected, and feel really aware of how to implement this into my everyday life.
All members of the Becketts team attend The Essentials course as part of their induction. It ensures that everyone begins to understand their own mental health and creates a common language amongst the team. I believe it is an important foundation of creating an open culture within the organisation.
I learnt a great deal, not least how the language and research around stress and mental health has evolved. It’s one of the best courses I’ve done on the subject
Really well presented, engaging and interactive – good mix of listening and doing. [The trainer was] very knowledgeable and welcoming [and] made a really safe space for us to have open conversations. Best course I’ve been on in a while.
Highly accessible and enjoyable training – in itself it was my first step to a revised approach to self care.
Karys and Fraser were really approachable, friendly, and supportive of us all, and they delivered the information in a non-judgemental and accessible way.
It was a vast amount of information delivered in an easy to understand way. Phil was very engaging and definitely knows what he is talking about! It was a brilliant course – thank you.
Some great feedback from the staff. Highly recommended training. Thank you!
The Essentials session delivered to our senior managers was greatly appreciated. The feedback that we received was very positive and not only did it give a general awareness of what it means to be emotionally healthy, it also gave practical advice on how we can satisfy our emotional needs. The course was well-delivered, engaging and very valuable to us as we look to develop our focus on wellbeing in the workplace.
I particularly enjoyed understanding the reasoning behind the need for sleep, and after taking it on board, I had the best night sleep of my life!
I found The Mental Health Toolkit extremely useful on both a personal and professional level. I took away areas in my personal life which could do with attention, this was done by completing the Emotional Needs Audit. I also found the information given on sleep was extremely interesting on a professional level, in an industry where a lack of sleep is commonplace.
I’d recommend this course to anyone interested in the subject of mental health on a personal or professional level.
It was a good session to explain how mental health can be affected in everyday life situations, and that it can “move” up and down the continuum. This itself can help with stigma. I was impressed how the session got everyone talking as a group and sharing their stories in an honest and vulnerable way, which helped bring us closer together as a team.
I found the session very informative and interesting. It gave me more insight into mental health and how it effects people differently.
I also took away some useful things for myself to work on and improve my own mental health.
I found it extremely useful. It was an informative, factual but gentle approach to the training and gave many of us a insight to mental health. It highlighted that it’s ok not to be ok, and to celebrate individualities rather then focusing on the negatives. It gave me some great strategies to take away and was a great way to bring the team together!
Sue was a very knowledgeable and supportive person.
Yesterday was a very good experience and it was definitely beneficial. Sue was very informative and had a lot of knowledge and understanding. Mental health is very close to my heart and I found yesterday so helpful.
I think it was also very beneficial to experience the workshop as a group, as we also learnt a lot about each other.
I found the talk last week really helpful – not only to self-reflect and consider things I may not have picked up on before, but also to see how my colleagues see their own mental wellbeing.
I now feel much more confident when discussing mental health as a whole, breaking it down into needs and resources is far more manageable.
Sue led the talk in an engaging manner, was informative and helpful. I would certainly recommend the workshop to groups and would enjoy doing another going into some more detail.
We just wanted to say a huge thank you for inviting us to participate in The Essentials training, which we attended today. We both found the session absolutely brilliant and can already see so many ways we can use it, both personally and professionally.
And a special mention to Phil, who was a fantastic trainer, who not only spoke with deep knowledge and immense passion, he also shared so many added value resources, activities and further reading opportunities – I have a huge long list of things to follow up and try. In addition to buying the cards for our own use, of course.
What you have developed is fantastic, we’ll certainly be sharing our experience with friends and family and will put a post out across our professional network too. Thank you again.
We have implemented The Essentials staff sessions and Supporting Mental Health line manager session. Our staff have already expressed how valuable the training sessions have been, with many proclaiming it is the best training they have ever been on.
